In Zeeland, the 1953 flood and the giant Delta Works barriers show how the Netherlands protects itself from the sea.
On the night of 31 January to 1 February 1953, a storm and an exceptional tide broke the dykes of Zeeland and killed more than 1,800 people in the Netherlands. At the Watersnoodmuseum, housed in caissons that were used to close the breaches, pupils learn about the disaster through testimonies and objects. At Neeltje Jans, they discover the Delta Works, the vast programme of barriers built afterwards, and see the Eastern Scheldt storm surge barrier up close. The theme links directly to today's questions of climate and rising sea levels. The trip suits geography, science and citizenship lessons for pupils aged about 10 to 18.
