Two days in Zeeland to understand the 1953 flood and the giant structures of the Delta Works.
On the night of 31 January to 1 February 1953, a storm flooded much of Zeeland and killed more than 1,800 people in the Netherlands. At the Watersnoodmuseum, housed in former dike caissons, pupils discover this disaster through testimonies and models. At Neeltje Jans they then see the Eastern Scheldt storm surge barrier, the centrepiece of the Delta Works, and understand how a country partly below sea level is protected. Middelburg and Zierikzee complete the trip with their old merchant streets. This trip suits geography, science and history lessons, from the last years of primary school to secondary.
Programme
Day 1: Zierikzee and the Watersnoodmuseum
- Departure from your school by coach at the agreed time.
- Journey with a 30-minute break after at most 3 hours of driving (our drivers’ safety rule).
- Walk around the old harbour of Zierikzee.
- Visit of the Watersnoodmuseum in Ouwerkerk (on request)
- Check-in at the accommodation in Zeeland.
- Dinner and overnight stay at the youth hostel or hotel.
Day 2: Neeltje Jans, Middelburg and return
- Breakfast at the accommodation.
- Visit of Deltapark Neeltje Jans and the Eastern Scheldt storm surge barrier (Oosterscheldekering) (on request)
- Walk through the centre of Middelburg, around the abbey and the town hall.
- Visit of the Zeeuws Museum (on request)
- Journey with a 30-minute break after at most 3 hours of driving (our drivers’ safety rule).
- Return to school in the evening.

Good to know
- Valid identity card (Kids-ID for children under 12), parental authorisation to travel abroad and European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) for each pupil.
- Departure and return times adapted to your school; pupils are supervised by their accompanying teachers.
- Deltapark Neeltje Jans is mainly open from April to October: dates to be checked; bring a windproof jacket, as the Zeeland coast is very exposed.
