Three days around Arnhem: the 1944 battle, life in the past at the Open Air Museum and Van Gogh at the Kröller-Müller.
In September 1944, Operation Market Garden tried to seize the Rhine bridges at Arnhem; the Airborne Museum, housed in the former British headquarters at Oosterbeek, tells how it unfolded and what it meant for the population. Pupils pay their respects at the Oosterbeek war cemetery and see the John Frost Bridge, at the heart of the fighting. At the Netherlands Open Air Museum they walk through rebuilt farms, mills and workshops showing everyday life in the Netherlands of the past. De Hoge Veluwe National Park, explored on its free white bicycles, is home to the Kröller-Müller Museum and one of the largest Van Gogh collections in the world. This trip suits secondary school history, geography and art lessons.
