Three days in Zeeland: Middelburg, the gigantic Delta Works, the harbours of Zierikzee and Veere and the local mussels.
Zeeland, right next to Flanders, is a province of islands and peninsulas where the sea is never far away. In Middelburg, the capital, the medieval abbey and the Gothic town hall bear witness to the wealth of the merchants of old. The Delta Works, built after the great flood of 1953, impress with the size of their barriers, discovered by coach and then at the Neeltje Jans site. The small harbours of Zierikzee and Veere, with their merchants’ houses and sailing boats, invite you to stroll. Distances are short, the hotel stays the same for two nights and Zeeland cuisine, with its mussels, will delight food lovers.
Programme
Day 1: Journey to Middelburg
- Morning departure from the pick-up point of your choice.
- Our drivers drive for a maximum of 3 hours, then take a 30-minute break.
- Arrival in Middelburg in the late morning.
- Lunch booked in a restaurant (on request)
- Guided walk in Middelburg: abbey, Gothic town hall and harbour quays (on request)
- Check-in at the hotel for 2 nights, dinner at the hotel.
Day 2: The Delta Works and Zierikzee
- Breakfast at the hotel.
- Drive across the Eastern Scheldt storm surge barrier (Oosterscheldekering), with a photo stop.
- Visit to the Neeltje Jans park and its exhibition on the 1953 flood and the Delta Works (on request)
- Lunch of Zeeland mussels (on request)
- In the afternoon, discovery of Zierikzee, its fortified gates and its old harbour.
- Dinner at the hotel.
Day 3: Veere and return
- Breakfast at the hotel, then a short drive to Veere.
- Free time in this small harbour with its Scottish houses and great church.
- Lunch booked in a restaurant (on request)
- Return journey in the early afternoon.
- Return to your region in the evening.
