Medieval Amersfoort, the star-shaped fortress of Naarden, Muiderslot castle and the fine country houses along the Vecht.
In the heart of the Netherlands, this trip brings together three gems less famous than the big cities, ideal for a group that enjoys peace and quiet. Amersfoort has kept its “wall houses”, its Tower of Our Lady and the Koppelpoort, a unique combined land and water gate; it is also the birthplace of the painter Piet Mondrian. Naarden is a perfectly preserved star fortress surrounded by double moats, explored on the flat. Nearby, Muiderslot, a medieval brick castle by the water, brings back the age of the writer Hooft. On the last day, the Vecht valley unfolds its Golden Age country houses, to be admired from the coach or by boat.
Programme
Day 1: Amersfoort
- Morning departure from the pick-up point of your choice; our drivers drive for no more than 3 hours, then take a 30-minute break.
- Coffee break on the way.
- Arrival in Amersfoort in the late morning.
- Seated lunch in the old town (on request).
- Guided tour of Amersfoort: Koppelpoort, wall houses and Tower of Our Lady (on request).
- Visit to the Mondriaanhuis (on request).
- Check-in at the hotel, dinner and overnight stay.
Day 2: Naarden and Muiderslot
- Breakfast at the hotel.
- Drive to Naarden and easy walk around the star fortress.
- Visit to the Nederlands Vestingmuseum in Naarden (on request).
- Seated lunch in Naarden (on request).
- Guided tour of Muiderslot castle (on request).
- Dinner and overnight stay at the hotel.
Day 3: The Vecht and return
- Breakfast at the hotel.
- Scenic drive along the Vecht and its Golden Age country houses.
- Cruise on the Vecht (on request).
- Seated lunch in Breukelen or nearby (on request).
- Return journey with regular breaks, arriving back in your region in the evening.
