Den Bosch, home of Hieronymus Bosch, its cathedral and hidden canals, then fortified Heusden and Loevestein Castle.
’s-Hertogenbosch, better known as Den Bosch, is a friendly and gourmet town where the painter Hieronymus Bosch spent his whole life. Your group admires St John’s Cathedral, a jewel of Brabant Gothic, strolls around the Markt and can taste the famous “Bossche bol”, a giant chocolate-covered choux bun. The boat trip on the Binnendieze, a river winding beneath the houses, is unforgettable, but you need to be able to step in and out of a small boat. The next day, Heusden charms with its ramparts, windmills and harbour, and Loevestein Castle tells of Grotius’s escape hidden in a book chest. The pace is gentle, with just one hotel night and plenty of free time.
