Five days in Croatia: Zagreb’s old town, the lakes and waterfalls of Plitvice, the Rastoke mills and the Karlovac aquarium.
This first trip to Croatia combines a Central European capital with one of the continent’s finest natural parks. In Zagreb, pupils discover the medieval Upper Town, St Mark’s Church with its colourful tiled roof, and the Technical Museum honouring Nikola Tesla, who was born in Croatia. Plitvice Lakes National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, has sixteen terraced lakes separated by travertine barriers, a rock still forming today through the action of water, mosses and algae. The village of Rastoke with its watermills and the freshwater aquarium in Karlovac extend this lesson in geography and biology. The trip suits pupils at the end of primary school and in secondary school, in science, geography and history.
Programme
Day 1: Departure for Croatia
- Departure from your school at the agreed time, in the late afternoon.
- Overnight journey with two drivers on board: our drivers drive for no more than 3 hours, then take a 30-minute break, by day and by night.
Day 2: Zagreb
- Arrival in Zagreb in the late morning.
- Discovering the Upper Town: St Mark’s Church, Lotrščak Tower and the funicular.
- Walk through the Lower Town, from Ban Jelačić Square to Dolac market.
- Visit to the Nikola Tesla Technical Museum (on request).
- Check-in at the accommodation, dinner and overnight stay.
Day 3: The Plitvice Lakes
- Breakfast and check-out.
- Drive to Plitvice Lakes National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
- Guided tour of the park: trails and boardwalks between the lakes and waterfalls, crossing Lake Kozjak by electric boat (on request).
- Check-in at the accommodation in the Plitvice area, dinner and overnight stay.
Day 4: Rastoke, Karlovac and departure
- Breakfast and check-out.
- Stop in Rastoke, a village of watermills where the Slunjčica meets the Korana.
- Visit to the Aquatika freshwater aquarium in Karlovac (on request).
- Departure in the afternoon.
- Overnight return journey with two drivers and regular breaks (no more than 3 hours of driving, then a 30-minute break).
Day 5: Return to Belgium
- Arrival back at school in the morning.

Good to know
- A valid identity card (Kids-ID for children under 12) and parental consent for travel abroad are required; please also bring the EHIC (European Health Insurance Card).
- Times are adapted to your school, and pupils are supervised by their teachers.
- At Plitvice, the wooden boardwalks are slippery in wet weather, so closed shoes are essential; swimming is not allowed in the park; the currency is the euro.
