Ten days in southern Dalmatia: Dubrovnik’s walls, Lokrum Island, the walls of Ston, the Neretva delta and Makarska.

This grand tour takes pupils all the way to Dubrovnik, a former maritime republic that long rivalled Venice. They walk round the walls of the UNESCO-listed old town, discover the Rector’s Palace and the Franciscan monastery’s pharmacy, one of the oldest in Europe, and on Mount Srđ learn about the recent history of the city’s siege during the war of 1991-1992. In Ston, the medieval walls and the still-working salt pans illustrate the economy of the old republic, while the Neretva delta and Lokrum Island, a nature reserve, open the trip up to biology. The Narona museum, built over a Roman temple, and Makarska’s shell museum complete the programme. The tour suits upper secondary pupils in history, citizenship, science and geography.
