Seven days in Istria: the Pula amphitheatre, the Poreč mosaics, Rovinj’s old town, hilltop villages and the Brijuni Islands.

The Istrian peninsula is a living page of European history, from Rome to Venice. In Pula, pupils discover one of the best-preserved Roman amphitheatres in the world, then in Poreč the UNESCO-listed Euphrasian Basilica with its 6th-century Byzantine mosaics. Inland, the Glagolitic Alley between Roč and Hum presents the old Slavic alphabet, a good starting point for the history of writing, and the Pazin chasm recalls Jules Verne’s novel Mathias Sandorf. Rovinj, with its Venetian lanes and harbour, and Brijuni National Park add the sea and nature to the programme. The trip suits secondary pupils in history, Latin, French and geography.
