Nine days around Zadar: Roman old town, Sea Organ, Velebit canyons, Nin salt pans, the Kornati Islands and Lake Vrana.
Zadar and northern Dalmatia are an ideal field-study area where history, science and nature meet. In the old town, pupils discover the Roman forum and the 9th-century Church of St Donatus, then two contemporary works by architect Nikola Bašić: the Sea Organ, played by the waves, and the Greeting to the Sun, a disc of solar panels that lights up at night. Paklenica National Park, at the foot of the Velebit range, takes them through a spectacular limestone canyon, and Nin, a cradle of Croatian history, shows how sea salt is still harvested. A boat trip to the Kornati Islands and the bird reserve at Lake Vrana, Croatia’s largest natural lake, complete the trip. It suits secondary pupils in science, geography, physics and history.
