A day of remembrance in Ypres and the Westhoek, following in the footsteps of First World War soldiers.
Ypres and the surrounding area saw fierce fighting throughout the First World War. At the In Flanders Fields Museum, housed in the Cloth Hall rebuilt after the war, pupils follow the fate of soldiers and civilians along an interactive route. At the Memorial Museum Passchendaele 1917 in Zonnebeke, they walk through reconstructed dugouts and trenches. Tyne Cot Cemetery, the largest Commonwealth war cemetery in the world, and the Menin Gate, engraved with the names of more than 54,000 missing soldiers, make the scale of the losses tangible. This day is mainly aimed at secondary school history and citizenship classes, and can be adapted for the last years of primary school.
