A day at Blegny-Mine, near Liège, to go down into a real coal mine and discover the life of miners.
Blegny-Mine is one of the few collieries in Europe where visitors can still go down into the original galleries. With a guide, pupils descend in the cage to 30 and then 60 metres underground and discover how coal was cut, the machines and the miners’ working conditions. Together with Grand-Hornu, Bois-du-Luc and Bois du Cazier, the site is one of the major mining sites of Wallonia listed as UNESCO World Heritage in 2012. The visit is a way to explore the Industrial Revolution, workers’ immigration and energy sources. It suits pupils from the age of 9 up to secondary school, in history, science and geography classes.
