A day in Bastogne to understand the Battle of the Bulge in the winter of 1944-1945 and civilian life during the siege.
In December 1944, Bastogne was surrounded by the German army during the Battle of the Bulge, the last major German offensive in the west. At the Bastogne War Museum, a modern exhibition takes pupils through the stories of several characters, civilians and soldiers, to understand the war on a human scale. Right next door, the star-shaped Mardasson Memorial pays tribute to the American soldiers who fell during the battle. At Bastogne Barracks, General McAuliffe’s cellar recalls his famous reply “Nuts!” to the German demand for surrender. This programme is designed for secondary school history classes, especially for pupils aged 14 to 18.
