A day at the Xanten Archaeological Park, on the site of a Roman town on the Rhine: walls, temple, amphitheatre and museum.
On the Rhine, near the Dutch border, Xanten is home to the remains of Colonia Ulpia Traiana, a Roman town founded around the year 100 under Emperor Trajan. The Xanten Archaeological Park, one of the largest open-air museums in Germany, has rebuilt part of the city walls, the harbour temple, the amphitheatre and houses on site, giving a concrete idea of the size and life of a Roman town. The RömerMuseum, built over the old baths, displays the objects found on the site. A very vivid outing for pupils aged 9 to 12, and for history and Latin lessons in secondary school.
