A day in Cologne: the UNESCO-listed Gothic cathedral, the Chocolate Museum and a walk along the Rhine.
Begun in 1248 and only completed in 1880, Cologne Cathedral is one of the largest Gothic buildings in the world, with towers 157 metres high. Pupils find out how medieval builders worked and can climb the 533 steps of the south tower. At the Chocolate Museum on the banks of the Rhine, they follow the journey of cocoa from the tropical plantation to the bar, past a small production line. The day links history, science and geography, and suits both primary pupils aged 8 to 12 and secondary pupils.
