A day in Aachen, Charlemagne’s favourite residence: the UNESCO-listed cathedral, the Town Hall and the city museum.
Close to the Belgian border, Aachen was Charlemagne’s favourite residence, where he had his Palatine Chapel built around the year 800. This chapel, the heart of today’s cathedral, was one of the very first sites inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1978, and around thirty German kings were crowned there. Pupils see Charlemagne’s throne and the Town Hall built on the foundations of his palace, then learn about the city’s history at the Centre Charlemagne. An ideal outing to study the Middle Ages in the last years of primary school or in history lessons in the first years of secondary school.
