Four days in Wrocław on the Oder: bronze dwarfs, the Racławice Panorama, Hydropolis and the Centennial Hall.
Built on a dozen islands in the Oder, Wrocław is a young student city with a rich past, by turns Bohemian, Austrian, Prussian and Polish. Pupils hunt for the hundreds of little bronze dwarfs hidden in the streets, a nod to the peaceful “Orange Alternative” opposition movement of the 1980s. They discover the Market Square and its Gothic town hall, then Ostrów Tumski, where a lamplighter still lights the gas lamps by hand every evening. The Racławice Panorama, a huge circular painting from 1894, depicts a battle of 1794 led by Tadeusz Kościuszko. Hydropolis explains the water cycle and the uses of water in a playful way, and the Centennial Hall, a UNESCO site, is a masterpiece of reinforced concrete. This trip suits pupils from age 10 and secondary-school history, geography and science classes.
