Five days in Kraków: the royal old town, Wawel Castle, the Wieliczka Salt Mine and the socialist-era district of Nowa Huta.

Poland’s former royal capital, Kraków has kept a medieval old town that was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List as early as 1978. Pupils discover the Main Market Square, the Cloth Hall and St Mary’s Basilica, from whose tower a trumpeter plays the hejnał every hour. On Wawel Hill, the castle and cathedral tell the story of the Polish kings, while the legend of the dragon delights younger pupils. Underground, the Wieliczka Salt Mine reveals galleries and chapels carved out of salt, a fine lesson in geology and in the history of work. Finally, the Nowa Huta district, built from 1949 around a huge steelworks, is a way into communist-era Poland. This trip is particularly well suited to secondary-school history, geography and science classes.
