Five days in Gdańsk, where the Second World War began and Solidarity was born, between a Hanseatic city and the Baltic Sea.
Once a great Hanseatic port, Gdańsk is a city where European history has been decided more than once. Pupils walk the Royal Route to the Long Market and the Neptune Fountain, then discover St Mary’s Church, one of the largest brick churches in the world. At Westerplatte they stand where the Second World War began on 1 September 1939, before exploring the subject further at the Museum of the Second World War. Next to the shipyard, the European Solidarity Centre tells the story of the August 1980 strikes, Lech Wałęsa and the peaceful fall of communism. An afternoon on the Baltic coast at Sopot rounds off the stay. This trip is ideal for history and citizenship classes for pupils aged 14 to 18.
