Four days in Łódź, a former textile capital turned city of film: converted factories, science and the memory of the ghetto.
In the 19th century, Łódź grew within a few decades from a small town into one of Europe’s largest textile centres, often nicknamed the “Polish Manchester”. Pupils walk the long Piotrkowska Street with its walk of fame of Polish cinema, then discover Manufaktura, Izrael Poznański’s former factory turned cultural quarter, and the workers’ houses of Księży Młyn. Home to the famous film school where Andrzej Wajda, Roman Polański and Krzysztof Kieślowski studied, Łódź is a UNESCO Creative City of Film. In a former power station, EC1 houses a science and technology centre and a planetarium where pupils explore energy and space. A moment of remembrance at Radegast station recalls the fate of the inhabitants of the Litzmannstadt ghetto, one of the largest ghettos set up by the Nazis. This trip is aimed at secondary schools, for history, science, economics and media studies.
