Three days in Thuringia: Luther’s Wartburg, Goethe’s and the Bauhaus’s Weimar, the Buchenwald Memorial and Erfurt.
Within a few kilometres, Thuringia brings together several major chapters of German history. At the Wartburg, Martin Luther translated the New Testament into German in 1521–1522. Weimar was the town of Goethe and Schiller, then the birthplace of the Bauhaus in 1919, while above the town the Buchenwald Memorial recalls the Nazi concentration camp. In Erfurt, the cathedral, the house-lined Merchants’ Bridge (Krämerbrücke) and the medieval Old Synagogue complete the route. This trip suits pupils aged 15 to 18, for history, languages, art and citizenship lessons.
