A day on the Waterloo battlefield to understand Napoleon’s downfall and the battle of 18 June 1815.
On 18 June 1815, the Battle of Waterloo brought Napoleon’s rule to an end and redrew the map of Europe. At the Memorial 1815, an underground museum at the foot of the Lion’s Mound, pupils discover the armies involved, their uniforms and how the day unfolded. They then climb the 226 steps of the Mound to read the battlefield landscape, before entering the Panorama, a huge circular painting completed in 1912. Hougoumont Farm, restored for the bicentenary of the battle, tells the story of some of the fiercest fighting of the day. This trip suits history classes, from the last years of primary school to secondary school.
