Zutphen and its chained library, Deventer, Zwolle, Kampen and Elburg: the wealthy Hanseatic merchant towns along the IJssel.
In the Middle Ages, the IJssel towns traded with the whole of Northern Europe as members of the Hanseatic League, and their historic centres still boast superb merchants’ houses, fortified gates and great churches. Your group discovers Zutphen and the librije of St Walburga’s Church, a medieval library with chained books, then Deventer, its lively Brink and its Bergkwartier. Zwolle charms with its Sassenpoort gate and Peperbus tower, Kampen with its gates on the IJssel, and Elburg, a small fortified town on the former Zuiderzee, offers a last peaceful stroll. The whole trip is based in one hotel, with no repacking, short drives and flat, pedestrian town centres.
Programme
Day 1: Zutphen
- Morning departure from the pick-up point of your choice; our drivers drive for no more than 3 hours, then take a 30-minute break.
- Coffee break on the way.
- Arrival in Zutphen in the early afternoon.
- Seated lunch in the centre (on request).
- Guided tour of Zutphen and the librije of St Walburga’s Church (on request).
- Check-in at the hotel, dinner and overnight stay.
Day 2: Deventer and the IJssel
- Breakfast at the hotel.
- Short drive to Deventer and stroll on the Brink and in the Bergkwartier.
- Guided tour of Deventer and St Lebuinus’ Church (on request).
- Seated lunch in Deventer (on request).
- Cruise on the IJssel (on request).
- Dinner and overnight stay at the hotel.
Day 3: Zwolle and Kampen
- Breakfast at the hotel.
- Morning in Zwolle: Sassenpoort, Peperbus tower and free time.
- Visit to Museum de Fundatie in Zwolle (on request).
- Seated lunch (on request).
- In the afternoon, stroll in Kampen along the IJssel and its old gates.
- Dinner and overnight stay at the hotel.
Day 4: Elburg and return
- Breakfast at the hotel.
- Stop in Elburg, a small fortified town on the former Zuiderzee.
- Seated lunch in Elburg (on request).
- Return journey with regular breaks, arriving back in your region in the evening.
