On the Verdun battlefield: the Memorial, the fort and ossuary of Douaumont and the Trench of Bayonets.
From February to December 1916, the Battle of Verdun pitted the French and German armies against each other for almost ten months and left more than 300,000 dead. At the Verdun Memorial, objects, testimonies and images help pupils understand the soldiers’ daily lives. They then discover Fort Douaumont, the ossuary holding the remains of unknown soldiers from both sides, and a landscape still scarred by shell holes and destroyed villages. The site has also become a symbol of Franco-German reconciliation and of European integration. This day is aimed mainly at secondary pupils, in history and citizenship classes.
