A day of history and science: the V2 bunker of La Coupole and its planetarium, then the cliffs of Cap Blanc-Nez.
Near Saint-Omer, La Coupole is a huge concrete dome built by Nazi Germany in 1943-1944 to launch V2 rockets at London; it was never used. Now a history centre, it explains the Occupation, the rocket war and the beginnings of space exploration, and its planetarium introduces pupils to astronomy. In the afternoon the coach heads to the Opal Coast and Cap Blanc-Nez, from where the English coast can be seen on a clear day. The chalk cliffs and the landscape of the Two Capes are also a fine lesson in geography and geology. A trip that links history, science and geography, ideal for secondary pupils and possible from the last two years of primary school.
