A day in Lille to discover Old Lille, the Vieille Bourse, the belfry and the collections of the Palais des Beaux-Arts.
Just an hour from Brussels, Lille is an easy and rewarding first discovery of France. Pupils explore Old Lille with its brick façades and the 17th-century Vieille Bourse (old stock exchange), then the Grand-Place and the town hall belfry, a UNESCO World Heritage Site together with the other belfries of Belgium and France. At the Palais des Beaux-Arts, one of the largest museums in France, they look at paintings, sculptures and relief models of fortified towns. The house where Charles de Gaulle was born can round off the day with a look at 20th-century history. The trip suits pupils in the last two years of primary school as well as secondary history, French and art classes.
