A 7-day tour of northern Croatia: baroque Varaždin, Trakošćan Castle, Kumrovec and Marija Bistrica.
Far from the coast, the Croatian Zagorje is a region of hills, vineyards, castles and small churches, still little known to Belgian travellers. Your group stays 4 nights in the Varaždin area, the former Croatian capital with baroque palaces and a renowned garden cemetery. Excursions are short: Trakošćan Castle by its lake, the Neanderthal Museum in Krapina, the village museum of Kumrovec and the great Marian shrine of Marija Bistrica. Zagorje cuisine, with its cheese štrukli, goes perfectly with these days. The route crosses Austria and Slovenia, with an overnight stop in Bavaria on the way out and back.
Programme
Day 1: Journey to Bavaria
- Morning departure from the location of your choice.
- Journey with regular breaks: our drivers drive for a maximum of 3 hours, then take a 30-minute break.
- Late-afternoon arrival in the Munich area and check-in at the hotel.
- Dinner and overnight at the hotel.
Day 2: Arrival in Varaždin
- Breakfast at the hotel.
- Drive to Croatia via Salzburg, Graz and Maribor.
- Late-afternoon arrival in the Varaždin area and check-in at the hotel for 4 nights.
- Dinner and overnight at the hotel.
Day 3: Baroque Varaždin
- Breakfast at the hotel.
- Guided tour of the old town: baroque palaces, cathedral and town hall (on request).
- Visit of the Old Castle and its museum (on request).
- Stroll in the Varaždin garden cemetery and free time on a café terrace (driver’s rest day).
- Dinner and overnight at the hotel.
Day 4: Trakošćan and Krapina
- Breakfast at the hotel.
- Drive to Trakošćan Castle (about 45 minutes), standing above its lake.
- Visit of Trakošćan Castle (on request).
- Lunch at a restaurant (on request).
- In the afternoon, Krapina, where remains of Neanderthal people were discovered.
- Visit of the Krapina Neanderthal Museum (on request).
- Dinner and overnight at the hotel.
Day 5: Kumrovec and Marija Bistrica
- Breakfast at the hotel.
- Drive to Kumrovec and its village museum of traditional Zagorje houses.
- Visit of the “Staro selo” open-air museum in Kumrovec (on request).
- Lunch of štrukli and Zagorje specialities at a restaurant (on request).
- In the afternoon, stop at the Marian shrine of Marija Bistrica.
- Dinner and overnight at the hotel.
Day 6: Journey to Bavaria
- Breakfast at the hotel.
- Departure through Slovenia and Austria.
- Journey with regular breaks: our drivers drive for a maximum of 3 hours, then take a 30-minute break.
- Overnight stop in the Munich area.
- Dinner and overnight at the hotel.
Day 7: Return to Belgium
- Breakfast at the hotel.
- Return journey to Belgium.
