Six days in Croatia’s Zagorje: prehistory at Krapina, baroque Varaždin, Trakošćan Castle and the village of Kumrovec.
This unusual trip to northern Croatia takes pupils far back in time. At Krapina, the Hušnjakovo site, excavated from 1899 by the palaeontologist Dragutin Gorjanović-Kramberger, has yielded hundreds of Neanderthal bones, and the nearby museum explains human evolution in a very visual way. Varaždin, Croatia’s capital in the 18th century, has a well-preserved baroque centre and a medieval fortress, while Trakošćan Castle beside its lake shows how the nobility lived. The open-air museum in Kumrovec, birthplace of Josip Broz Tito, shows rural life in the past and opens a discussion on the history of Yugoslavia. The programme suits pupils from the last years of primary school and secondary pupils, in history, science and geography.
