6 days at the crossroads of Europe: Habsburg Trieste, the Giant Cave, Roman Aquileia and the memorial sites of the 20th century.
Trieste, the great port of Austria-Hungary that became Italian after the First World War, is an ideal place to understand European history. Pupils discover Piazza Unità d’Italia opening onto the sea, the Roman theatre, San Giusto hill and Miramare Castle, built for Archduke Maximilian of Habsburg. The Giant Cave, a huge chamber in the Karst plateau, introduces geology and karst phenomena. Remembrance work takes place at the Risiera di San Sabba, the only Nazi camp in Italy with a crematorium, and at the Redipuglia memorial, where some 100,000 Italian soldiers of the Great War rest. Aquileia, with the mosaics of its basilica, and Palmanova, a star-shaped fortress town, are UNESCO World Heritage Sites. This trip is designed for upper secondary pupils, in history, geography and citizenship.
