10 days in southern Italy: the Sassi of Matera, the trulli of Alberobello, Castel del Monte, baroque Lecce and San Marino.
This grand tour takes pupils to the heel of the Italian boot. In Matera, they discover the Sassi, districts carved into the rock and inhabited since prehistoric times, now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The trulli of Alberobello, dry-stone houses with conical roofs, and Castel del Monte, the octagonal castle of Emperor Frederick II, raise questions of architecture and geometry. The Castellana Caves illustrate karst landscapes, and Lecce shows a baroque city built from a soft, golden limestone. In Bari, the Basilica of St Nicholas, where the relics of the patron saint of schoolchildren rest, speaks directly to Belgian pupils. On the way back, San Marino, one of the oldest republics in the world, prompts reflection on institutions; this trip suits secondary pupils, in history, geography, science and citizenship.
