5 days in South Tyrol and Trentino: Ötzi the Iceman, the UNESCO-listed Dolomites and the science museum in Trento.
This tour of the Italian Alps combines prehistory, geology and science. In Bolzano, the South Tyrol Museum of Archaeology presents Ötzi, the Iceman, about 5,300 years old, found in 1991 with his clothes and tools. On the Alpe di Siusi, one of the largest alpine meadows in Europe, pupils observe the Dolomites, a UNESCO World Heritage Site for their landscapes and geological interest, while the earth pyramids of the Renon plateau show erosion at work. In Trento, the MUSE science museum designed by Renzo Piano explores mountains, biodiversity and evolution, and the Buonconsiglio Castle tells the history of the city of the Council. This trip suits upper primary and secondary pupils, in science, geography and history.
Programme
Day 1: Departure for South Tyrol
- Departure from your school at the agreed time, in the evening.
- Overnight journey with two drivers taking turns: a 30-minute break at least every 3 hours of driving.
- Route through Germany, Austria and the Brenner Pass.
Day 2: Bolzano and Ötzi
- Arrival in Bolzano in the morning.
- Visit of the South Tyrol Museum of Archaeology and Ötzi (on request).
- Educational workshop on life in the Copper Age (on request).
- Walk through the old town and Piazza Walther.
- Check-in at the accommodation and dinner.
Day 3: In the heart of the Dolomites
- Breakfast at the accommodation.
- Cable car from Siusi up to the Alpe di Siusi (on request).
- Easy hike with a mountain guide on the geology of the Dolomites (on request).
- Late in the day, cable car up to the Renon plateau and walk to the earth pyramids (on request).
- Return to the accommodation and dinner.
Day 4: Trento
- Breakfast at the accommodation.
- Drive to Trento.
- Visit of the MUSE science museum (on request).
- Visit of the Buonconsiglio Castle (on request).
- Walk to the cathedral, where sessions of the Council of Trent were held.
- Return to the accommodation and dinner.
Day 5: Return to Belgium
- Breakfast, then return journey with two drivers and a 30-minute break every 3 hours of driving.
- Arrival back at school in the evening.

Good to know
- Identity card (Kids-ID for children under 12), parental consent for travel abroad and European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) for every pupil.
- Times adapted to your school; pupils are supervised by their teachers; our drivers drive for 3 hours at most, then take a 30-minute break, day and night.
- The Alpe di Siusi lifts run in summer and winter (dates to be checked); bring walking shoes, a windproof jacket and sun protection, even in spring.
