A day in Trier, Germany’s oldest city: Porta Nigra, cathedral, Basilica of Constantine and a tourist train ride.
Founded by the Romans, Trier has a UNESCO-listed group of ancient monuments that is unique north of the Alps. Your group discovers the Porta Nigra, a huge Roman gate, then St Peter’s Cathedral and the neighbouring Church of Our Lady, one of the oldest Gothic churches in Germany. To avoid long walks, the little tourist train links the main sites, from the Imperial Baths to the Basilica of Constantine. Lunch can be booked in the old town, before free time on the Hauptmarkt with its colourful façades. A fine day of history at a relaxed pace.
