A day on the Rhine: Beethoven’s birthplace in Bonn, then the Drachenfels rack railway in Königswinter.
Former federal capital, Bonn is also the birthplace of Beethoven, whose house has become a moving museum. Your group discovers the market square and its old Rococo town hall before heading to Königswinter on the other bank of the Rhine. There, Germany’s oldest rack railway still in service, opened in 1883, climbs effortlessly up the Drachenfels, the “Dragon’s Rock”. Halfway up, Drachenburg Castle, a late 19th-century residence, can be visited as an option, and the summit offers a magnificent view over the Rhine valley. A varied day by the river, with no long walks.
