A day in Trier, a former Roman capital: Porta Nigra, the Imperial Baths, the Basilica of Constantine and the amphitheatre.

Founded by the Romans as Augusta Treverorum, Trier is considered the oldest city in Germany and was one of Emperor Constantine’s residences in the 4th century. Its Roman monuments, listed as UNESCO World Heritage, let pupils see for real a city gate, baths with their underground passages, a huge throne hall and an amphitheatre. At the Rhineland Museum (Rheinisches Landesmuseum), they can also see mosaics, carved stones and a famous treasure of Roman gold coins. An ideal outing to study Antiquity in the last years of primary school, or for history and Latin lessons in secondary school.

Programme

  • Departure from your school by coach at the agreed time.
  • A 30-minute break after 3 hours of driving at most: this is our drivers’ safety rule, day and night.
  • Arrival in Trier, the oldest city in Germany.
  • Guided tour of the Porta Nigra, a Roman gate from the 2nd century (on request).
  • Walk via the Market Square and the cathedral to the Basilica of Constantine.
  • Packed lunch brought from home (or free lunch).
  • Visit of the Imperial Baths (Kaiserthermen) and their underground passages (on request).
  • Visit of the Roman amphitheatre (on request).
  • Visit of the Rhineland Museum (Rheinisches Landesmuseum) and its gold coin treasure (on request).
  • Return journey and arrival back at school in the evening.

Good to know

  • Valid identity card (Kids-ID for children under 12), parental authorisation to travel abroad and European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) for each pupil.
  • Times adapted to your school; pupils are supervised by the accompanying teachers.
  • Longer journey from the west of Belgium: an early start is recommended; teachers choose two or three visits depending on the time available.

Cancellation and refund protection

Optional, to be taken when booking: you can cancel without giving a reason and get the base price of the trip back, provided your request reaches us at least 48 hours before departure for a day trip, 7 days before if admission tickets are included, 14 days before for a trip with overnight stays. Price: 7 % of the trip up to €1,000, 5 % from €1,001 to €2,500, 3.5 % above.
