Two days in Trier, Germany’s oldest city: the Porta Nigra, Roman baths, the amphitheatre and a Roman gold treasure.
Founded by the Romans as Augusta Treverorum, Trier was one of the residences of the Western Roman emperors. Its Roman monuments, listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, let pupils study Antiquity on the spot: the Porta Nigra, the Basilica of Constantine, the Imperial Baths, the amphitheatre and the Roman bridge over the Moselle. At the Rheinisches Landesmuseum, pupils discover mosaics, gravestones and the famous Trier gold coin hoard. Karl Marx’s birthplace opens a window on 19th-century history. This trip suits pupils from age 10 to secondary level, for history and Latin lessons.
