A countryside day just over the border: Avesnois hedgerows, Maroilles cheese, Lac du Val-Joly and the fortified village of Parfondeval.

Just across the border, near Chimay, the Avesnois and Thiérache reveal a green countryside of hedgerows, orchards and pastures, at the peaceful pace of grazing cows. This is the home of Maroilles, an orange-rinded cheese that you discover at a producer’s, before a seated lunch with local flavours, flamiche or Maroilles tart. In the afternoon, an easy walk along the Lac du Val-Joly, one of the largest lakes in northern France, offers a breath of fresh air. The day ends in Parfondeval, one of the most beautiful villages in France, with its brick and bluestone houses around a fortified church. Little driving from Wallonia and a thoroughly gentle day.

Programme

  • Morning departure from the place of your choice.
  • Drive to the Avesnois with a coffee break on the way: our drivers drive no more than 3 hours, then take a 30-minute break.
  • Coach drive through the Avesnois hedgerow country, with a stop in the village of Maroilles.
  • Visit of a farm or cheese dairy and Maroilles tasting (on request).
  • Seated lunch in a restaurant serving local produce (on request).
  • Easy walk along the Lac du Val-Joly.
  • Stop in Parfondeval and guided tour of the fortified church of Saint-Médard (on request).
  • Return to your region in the late afternoon or evening.

Good to know

  • Valid identity card and European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) for each participant; bring your usual medication.
  • Departure and return times adapted to your group’s pick-up point; trip available from 20 participants, on the date of your choice, price on quotation.
  • Walking level: easy, flat paths around the Lac du Val-Joly and gently sloping village of Parfondeval. Participants using a wheelchair or with reduced mobility: please let us know when booking.
  • Day trip recommended from April to October; visits to producers are booked in advance and depend on their availability.

Cancellation and refund protection

Optional, to be taken when booking: you can cancel without giving a reason and get the base price of the trip back, provided your request reaches us at least 48 hours before departure for a day trip, 7 days before if admission tickets are included, 14 days before for a trip with overnight stays. Price: 7 % of the trip up to €1,000, 5 % from €1,001 to €2,500, 3.5 % above.
