Close to the Belgian Gaume: the basilica of Avioth, the citadel of Montmédy and Longwy, its enamels and its Vauban-fortified town.
Very close to the Belgian border, this day in northern Lorraine brings together three fine discoveries just a few kilometres apart. In the small village of Avioth stands a Gothic basilica of astonishing size, a former place of pilgrimage, with its Recevresse, a small chapel of finely carved stone unique in France. The citadel of Montmédy overlooks the Chiers valley, and you can walk along part of its ramparts and upper town. After a seated lunch, Longwy reveals its colourful enamels, a craft born in the 19th century, and its upper town fortified by Vauban, a UNESCO World Heritage site. Little driving from the province of Luxembourg and southern Wallonia, for a varied and peaceful day.
