On the Somme battlefields: the Historial in Péronne, the Thiepval Memorial and the trenches of Beaumont-Hamel.
The Battle of the Somme began on 1 July 1916 and was one of the deadliest of the First World War. At the Historial of the Great War in Péronne, housed in a medieval castle, pupils compare the lives of French, British and German soldiers and civilians. The Franco-British Thiepval Memorial bears the names of more than 72,000 missing soldiers, and the Beaumont-Hamel Newfoundland Memorial park has preserved the lines of the trenches and the shell holes. A stop at a military cemetery offers a moment of reflection and discussion about peace. A powerful day of remembrance, designed for secondary history and citizenship classes.
