A day in southern Luxembourg: a train ride into an old iron mine, experiments at the Science Center and blast furnaces.
Southern Luxembourg, the “Red Lands”, owes its wealth to the iron ore known as minette and to the steel industry. At the National Mining Museum in Rumelange, pupils board a small train that takes them into the galleries, where they discover the hard work of the miners. At the Luxembourg Science Center in Differdange, housed in a former power station, they carry out physics, chemistry and maths experiments at dozens of interactive stations. A stop at the Belval blast furnaces shows how the industrial site became a university district. This day trip suits pupils from the last years of primary school to secondary, for science, history and geography.
