A day in the industrial Ruhr: the UNESCO-listed Zollverein Coal Mine, the Ruhr Museum and the Duisburg-Nord ironworks.
For more than a century, the Ruhr was the coal and steel heart of Germany, just as the coalfields of Wallonia and Limburg were in Belgium. In Essen, the Zollverein Coal Mine Industrial Complex, closed in 1986 and listed as UNESCO World Heritage, shows the journey of coal from the shaft to the washing plant and houses the Ruhr Museum, devoted to the history of the region. In Duisburg, the former Meiderich ironworks has become a park where pupils can climb a blast furnace and see nature taking over again. The day suits history, geography and science lessons, from the end of primary school to secondary school.
