Ancient Rome, Pompeii frozen by the eruption of AD 79, Vesuvius, the streets of Naples and the Amalfi Coast by boat: the great southern trip.

This trip takes pupils from the Rome of the emperors to the Bay of Naples. Two full days in Rome immerse them in Antiquity and the Renaissance, from the Colosseum to the Vatican. They then walk the streets of Pompeii, buried by the eruption of AD 79, climb to the crater of Vesuvius, discover the energy of Naples and sail along the Amalfi Coast. Overnight stops in Switzerland and Tuscany avoid any night driving. The departure date and time are set with your school in the quote. The journey is made by day, with a 30-minute break every 3 hours of driving, and the coach stays with the group on site.

Good to know

  • Valid identity card or passport, signed parental consent form for each pupil under 18 and European Health Insurance Card (EHIC), to be requested from your health insurance fund a few weeks before departure; an identity card is enough to cross Switzerland, and a few Swiss francs may come in handy at the overnight stops.
  • Our drivers drive for a maximum of 3 hours, then take a 30-minute break, day and night. An overnight stop in Switzerland on the way out, then in Tuscany and Switzerland on the way back, avoids any night driving, and two drivers take turns at the wheel.
  • Supervision is provided by the accompanying teachers; each pupil signs a code of conduct based on the school rules (no alcohol for minors or on the coach, no drug use, punctuality and compliance with instructions during free time, shoulders and knees covered in the Vatican, watchfulness for pickpockets in Rome and Naples, closed shoes for the Vesuvius path).
  • The pupil list and rooming list are entered in the school’s online area (Excel import possible); rooms are allocated according to your instructions.
  • Recommended period: April–May or September–October, when boats serve the Amalfi Coast and before the great heat; the Colosseum, the Vatican and Pompeii must be booked several months in advance. Italian state sites (Colosseum, Pantheon, Pompeii) are free for under-18s, with a group booking. Italy uses the euro; lunches are not included: allow around €10–15 per pupil per day, with Neapolitan pizza remaining very affordable.
