Heidelberg Castle and its student old town on the Neckar, then Frankfurt, between the Römer, the skyscrapers and the museums on the banks of the Main.

Two faces of Germany in a single trip: Heidelberg, the romantic city par excellence, with its red sandstone castle, the country’s oldest university and its lanes along the Neckar, then Frankfurt, Europe’s financial capital, where the rebuilt old town faces the skyscrapers. Pupils go from the history of the Holy Roman Empire to the headquarters of the European Central Bank. The departure date and time are set with your school in the quote; the journey is made by day, with a 30-minute break every 3 hours of driving, and the coach stays with the group on site.

  • Departure from your school early in the morning, at the agreed time, and daytime drive to Baden-Württemberg (about 5 hours 30 to 6 hours 30 depending on your school, including stops).
  • Our drivers drive for a maximum of 3 hours, then take a 30-minute break, day and night.
  • Arrival in the afternoon and first walk on the Old Bridge (Alte Brücke), with a view of the castle and the old town on the Neckar.
  • Check-in at the accommodation for three nights, dinner and supervised evening.

Day 2: Heidelberg Castle and old town

  • Funicular ride (Bergbahn) up to Heidelberg Castle, the famous red sandstone ruin overlooking the Neckar: the courtyard, the panoramic terrace and the Great Vat (admission included).
  • Lunch at your own expense, then walk along the Hauptstraße, one of the longest pedestrian streets in Germany, to the Market Square and the Church of the Holy Spirit.
  • Visit to the Student Prison (Studentenkarzer) of Germany’s oldest university (on request).
  • Late afternoon on the Philosophers’ Walk (Philosophenweg), on the other bank, for the best view of the city.
  • Dinner and supervised evening.

Day 3: A day in Frankfurt

  • Drive to Frankfurt (about 1 hour 15): the Römerberg, the Römer town hall and the Paulskirche, where the first elected German parliament sat in 1848.
  • Walk through the rebuilt New Old Town to St Bartholomew’s Cathedral, then past the European Central Bank.
  • Lunch at your own expense, then view of the skyline from the Main Tower platform (on request).
  • Visit to the Senckenberg Natural History Museum and its dinosaur skeletons (on request), or a walk across the Eiserner Steg footbridge and along the Main.
  • Return to Heidelberg, dinner and supervised evening.

Good to know

  • Valid identity card or passport, signed parental consent form for each pupil under 18 and European Health Insurance Card (EHIC), to be requested from your health insurance fund a few weeks before departure; an identity document may be requested at the Main Tower security check.
  • Our drivers drive for a maximum of 3 hours, then take a 30-minute break, day and night.
  • Supervision is provided by the accompanying teachers; each pupil signs a code of conduct based on the school rules (no alcohol for minors or on the coach, no drug use, punctuality and compliance with instructions during free time, care around the many bikes and trams).
  • The pupil list and rooming list are entered in the school’s online area (Excel import possible); rooms are allocated according to your instructions.
  • Recommended period: April to October, to enjoy the castle terraces and the Philosophers’ Walk; the Main Tower platform closes in bad weather. Germany uses the euro and the same electrical sockets as Belgium; bring good shoes, as the climbs are steep. Lunches are not included: allow a budget of around €10–15 per pupil per day; on request, the hotel can provide packed lunches.
