The colourful houses of Nyhavn, a canal cruise, the Little Mermaid and Tivoli: Copenhagen, capital of design, ferry crossing included.

Copenhagen wins pupils over with its relaxed atmosphere, its canals, its bikes and the Danish way of life. They set off on a canal cruise from Nyhavn, greet the Little Mermaid, watch the changing of the guard at Amalienborg and can spend an evening at Tivoli, one of the oldest amusement parks in the world. As the journey exceeds 900 km, an overnight stop is planned in the Hamburg area on the way out and on the way back, with a ferry crossing of the Baltic. The departure date and time are set with your school in the quote. The journey is made by day, with a 30-minute break every 3 hours of driving, and the coach stays with the group on site.

Programme

Day 1: Departure from your school and overnight stop near Hamburg

  • Departure from your school early in the morning, at the time agreed with you.
  • Daytime drive to northern Germany via Dortmund and Bremen (about 520 to 620 km depending on your school, 6.5 to 7.5 hours excluding stops).
  • Our drivers drive for a maximum of 3 hours, then take a 30-minute break, day and night.
  • Arrival in the Hamburg area in the late afternoon: check-in at the hotel for the overnight stop, dinner and quiet evening.

Day 2: Ferry crossing and arrival in Copenhagen

  • Departure after breakfast to Puttgarden, on the island of Fehmarn (about 150 km, 2 hours).
  • Ferry crossing of the Fehmarn Belt to Rødby (about 45 min), then drive to Copenhagen (about 160 km, 2 hours).
  • Arrival in the early afternoon and check-in at the accommodation for two nights.
  • First walk: the Strøget pedestrian street, City Hall Square and the colourful harbour of Nyhavn.
  • Dinner and supervised evening.

Day 3: Copenhagen, from the canals to the Little Mermaid

  • Canal cruise from Nyhavn, with views of the Opera House, Christianshavn and Christiansborg Palace.
  • Walk to the Little Mermaid via the Kastellet citadel, then changing of the Royal Guard at noon at Amalienborg Palace.
  • Lunch at your own expense, then trip up the tower of Christiansborg Palace, the highest in the city (free admission).
  • Walk through the canal district of Christianshavn; the ‘free town’ of Christiania is only seen from the outside and is not part of the visit.
  • Dinner, then supervised evening at the Tivoli Gardens, open since 1843 (on request).

Day 4: Morning in Copenhagen and drive to Germany

  • Rooms vacated after breakfast.
  • Visit to Rosenborg Castle and the Danish Crown Jewels (on request).
  • Climb up the Round Tower, a 17th-century observatory with its spiral ramp (on request), then lunch at your own expense.
  • Departure around 2 pm, Rødby–Puttgarden ferry crossing and drive to the Hamburg area (about 4.5 hours including the crossing).
  • Check-in at the hotel for the overnight stop, dinner and last supervised evening.

Day 5: Return to Belgium

  • Departure after breakfast.
  • Daytime drive back to Belgium with regular stops.

Good to know

  • Valid identity card or passport, signed parental consent form for each pupil under 18 and European Health Insurance Card (EHIC), to be requested from your health insurance fund a few weeks before departure.
  • Our drivers drive for a maximum of 3 hours, then take a 30-minute break, day and night. As the journey exceeds 900 km, an overnight stop is planned in the Hamburg area on the outward and return journeys: no night driving.
  • Supervision is provided by the accompanying teachers; each pupil signs a code of conduct based on the school rules (no alcohol for minors or on the coach, no drug use, punctuality and compliance with instructions during free time, Christiania excluded from the programme and off-limits during free time, care around the very many bikes).
  • The pupil list and rooming list are entered in the school’s online area (Excel import possible); rooms are allocated according to your instructions.
  • Recommended period: April to September, when the days are long and Tivoli is open (the park also reopens for Halloween and Christmas, but is closed at the start of the year). Denmark uses the Danish krone (DKK) and bank cards are accepted everywhere; it is an expensive country: for the lunches, allow a budget of around €15–20 per pupil per day, or hotel packed lunches on request. A windproof jacket is useful in every season.
