Bordeaux’s water mirror, the Dune du Pilat, a surf lesson in Biarritz, Saint-Jean-de-Luz and Bayonne: the Atlantic and the Basque Country.

This trip takes pupils to the ocean. In Bordeaux they discover the UNESCO-listed centre and the water mirror on Place de la Bourse, then climb the Dune du Pilat, the highest in Europe. On the Basque coast they catch their first wave during a surf lesson led by qualified instructors, stroll through Biarritz and Saint-Jean-de-Luz and finish in Bayonne, capital of the French Basque Country. An overnight stop near Tours on the way out and near Poitiers on the way back keeps the journey comfortable. The departure date and time are set with your school in the quote. Travel is by day, with a 30-minute break every 3 hours of driving, and the coach stays with the group on site.

Good to know

  • Valid identity card or passport, signed parental consent form for each pupil under 18 and European Health Insurance Card (EHIC), to be requested from your health insurance fund a few weeks before departure.
  • Our drivers drive for a maximum of 3 hours, then take a 30-minute break, day and night. An overnight stop near Tours on the way out and near Poitiers on the way back avoids overly long days on the road.
  • Supervision is provided by the accompanying teachers; each pupil signs a code of conduct based on the school rules (no alcohol for minors or on the coach, no drug use, punctuality and compliance with instructions during free time, swimming only on lifeguarded beaches and with the teachers' permission, as ocean currents are strong).
  • The pupil list and rooming list are entered in the school's online area (Excel import possible); rooms are allocated according to your instructions.
  • Recommended period: May to June or September, when the ocean is milder for surfing; the La Rhune train runs from mid-March to early November and should be booked in advance. France uses the euro; bring swimwear, a towel, sun cream and good shoes for the dune. Lunches are not included: allow a budget of around €10–15 per pupil per day.
