Seals at Le Hourdel, a guided walk across the bay, a steam train ride and a bike tour: four days of fresh air on the coast of Picardy.

The Bay of Somme, one of the most beautiful bays in the world, is an ideal outdoor playground for a final-year trip close to Belgium: pupils cycle to the seal colony at the Pointe du Hourdel, cross the bay on foot with a nature guide following the tides, ride the Bay of Somme steam railway and stroll through the medieval town of Saint-Valery. The departure date and time are set with your school in the quote. The journey is made in daytime, with a 30-minute break every 3 hours of driving, and the coach stays with the group on site for all transfers.

Programme

Day 1: Departure from your school and arrival in Saint-Valery-sur-Somme

  • Departure from your school early in the morning, at the agreed time, daytime drive to the Picardy coast (about 4 to 5 hours, excluding stops).
  • Our drivers drive for a maximum of 3 hours, then take a 30-minute break, day and night.
  • Arrival in Saint-Valery-sur-Somme in the early afternoon: walk through the upper town, the Porte Guillaume and along the quay facing the bay.
  • Check-in at the accommodation for three nights, dinner and supervised evening.

Day 2: By bike to the seals of the Pointe du Hourdel

  • Bike hire and supervised ride from Saint-Valery to Le Hourdel via Cap Hornu (about 15 km, flat ground).
  • Watching the harbour seals and grey seals resting on the sandbanks, from a safe distance and with binoculars.
  • Free lunch in Le Hourdel, then discovery of the pebble beach of Cayeux-sur-Mer and its colourful beach huts.
  • Return by bike or by coach depending on the weather, dinner and supervised evening.

Day 3: Steam train, Le Crotoy and a walk across the bay

  • Steam train ride on the Bay of Somme Railway, from Saint-Valery to Le Crotoy.
  • Walk around Le Crotoy, the small south-facing harbour where Jules Verne once lived, and supervised free time on the beach.
  • Crossing of the bay on foot with a nature guide, from Le Crotoy to Saint-Valery (about 2.5 hours, timing set by the tides): sands, channels and birds of the bay.
  • Dinner and supervised evening.

Day 4: Parc du Marquenterre and return to your school

  • Departure after breakfast.
  • Visit to the Parc du Marquenterre, a large reserve for migratory birds between dunes and marshes (on request).
  • Daytime drive back to Belgium, with a 30-minute break every 3 hours of driving.
  • Arrival at your school in the evening.

Good to know

  • Valid identity card or passport, signed parental consent form for each pupil under 18 and European Health Insurance Card (EHIC), to be requested from your health insurance fund a few weeks before departure.
  • Our drivers drive for a maximum of 3 hours, then take a 30-minute break, day and night.
  • Supervision is provided by the accompanying teachers; each pupil signs a code of conduct based on the school rules (no alcohol for minors or on the coach, no drug use, punctuality and compliance with instructions); in the bay, nobody ventures out without a guide because of the tides, and everyone stays at least 300 m away from the seals.
  • The pupil list and rooming list are entered in the school's online area (Excel import possible); rooms are allocated according to your instructions.
  • Recommended period: from April to early October, when the steam train runs (timetable to be checked when quoting); the bay crossing depends on the tide times, so the programme of days 2 and 3 may be swapped. Bring boots or shoes that can get wet, a windproof jacket and shorts for the crossing; lunches are not included, allow around €10–15 per pupil per day.
