Four days in Renesse on Schouwen-Duiveland island: long beaches, the harbour of Zierikzee, seals and the memory of 1953.
Renesse has one of the longest beaches in Zeeland, backed by wooded dunes, and a peaceful village atmosphere outside the summer holidays. Your group stays three nights in a hotel near the sea, on half board, with short days and journeys of less than half an hour. Zierikzee, a former Hanseatic town, has kept its old harbour, water gates and massive tower, the Dikke Toren. A boat trip on the Eastern Scheldt offers a chance to see seals, and the Watersnoodmuseum in Ouwerkerk, housed in four caissons, movingly tells the story of the 1953 flood. Every day there is time left for the beach and for rest.
Programme
Day 1: Journey to Zeeland
- Morning departure from the place of your choice.
- Coffee break on the way: our drivers drive for 3 hours at most, then take a 30-minute break.
- Arrival in Renesse in the early afternoon.
- Group lunch on the way or in Renesse (on request).
- Check-in at the hotel near the sea for 3 nights.
- Free walk on the beach.
- Dinner at the hotel.
Day 2: Zierikzee and the Eastern Scheldt
- Breakfast at the hotel, then a short drive to Zierikzee.
- Guided walk around the old harbour and old town of Zierikzee (on request).
- Group lunch in Zierikzee, with Zeeland mussels in season (on request).
- Boat trip on the Eastern Scheldt in search of seals (on request).
- Dinner at the hotel.
Day 3: The memory of 1953 and the beach
- Breakfast at the hotel.
- Visit of the Watersnoodmuseum in Ouwerkerk (on request).
- Back to Renesse for lunch.
- Free afternoon on the beach or a walk to Moermond Castle (exterior view).
- Dinner at the hotel.
Day 4: The Eastern Scheldt barrier and return
- Breakfast at the hotel.
- Stop at the Eastern Scheldt storm surge barrier (Oosterscheldekering), a major work of the Delta Works.
- Return journey in the late morning.
- Group lunch on the way (on request).
- Return to your region in the evening.
