In Reims, pupils discover the cathedral where French kings were crowned and the room where Germany signed its surrender in 1945.
Reims is an open-air history book. For centuries the kings of France were crowned in its Notre-Dame cathedral, a Gothic masterpiece famous for its Smiling Angel and a UNESCO World Heritage Site together with the Palace of Tau and the Basilica of Saint-Remi. The Palace of Tau, the former archbishops’ palace, displays objects from the cathedral treasury and from the coronations. At the Museum of the Surrender, pupils enter the room where Germany signed its capitulation on 7 May 1945, a key moment at the end of the Second World War in Europe. This trip is particularly suited to secondary history classes, and to the last two years of primary school with an adapted tour.
