Seven days in Provence: Avignon and the Palais des Papes, the Pont du Gard, Nîmes, Arles and the Camargue, with overnight stops.
Provence is a true open-air history lesson, from Roman Gaul to the medieval popes. The Pont du Gard, a Roman aqueduct almost 50 metres high, and the Nîmes arena, one of the best-preserved Roman amphitheatres, show the skills of ancient engineers. In Avignon, the Palais des Papes recalls that the city was the seat of the papacy in the 14th century. Arles, with its amphitheatre and ancient theatre, then opens onto the Camargue, its lagoons, pink flamingos and migratory birds. This tour suits secondary-school history, Latin and science classes.
Programme
Day 1: Journey south
- Departure from your school at the agreed time.
- Regular breaks: our drivers drive for 3 hours at most, then take a 30-minute break, day and night.
- Overnight stop in Burgundy.
- Check-in at the accommodation and dinner.
Day 2: Arrival in Provence
- Breakfast.
- Drive down the Rhône valley, with regular breaks.
- Arrival in the Avignon area in the afternoon.
- Check-in at the accommodation and dinner.
Day 3: Avignon, city of the popes
- Breakfast.
- A day on foot, without the coach (driver’s rest day).
- Visit of the Palais des Papes (on request).
- Visit of the Pont Saint-Bénézet, the bridge of Avignon (on request).
- Walk along the ramparts and through the lanes of the city.
- Dinner and overnight at the accommodation.
Day 4: Pont du Gard and Nîmes
- Breakfast.
- Visit of the Pont du Gard site and its museum (on request).
- Visit of the Nîmes arena (on request).
- Stop in front of the Maison Carrée, the Roman temple of Nîmes.
- Dinner and overnight at the accommodation.
Day 5: Arles and the Camargue
- Breakfast.
- Visit of the amphitheatre and ancient theatre of Arles (on request).
- Visit of the Pont de Gau bird park in the Camargue (on request).
- Dinner and overnight at the accommodation.
Day 6: Journey north
- Breakfast.
- Regular breaks: our drivers drive for 3 hours at most, then take a 30-minute break, day and night.
- Overnight stop in Burgundy.
- Check-in at the accommodation and dinner.
Day 7: Return
- Breakfast.
- Regular breaks: our drivers drive for 3 hours at most, then take a 30-minute break, day and night.
- Return to school in the evening.

Good to know
- Identity card (Kids-ID for children under 12) and parental consent for travel abroad for each pupil, as well as the European Health Insurance Card (EHIC).
- Times adapted to your school; pupils are supervised by the accompanying teachers.
- It is already hot in May and June: bring a cap, sun cream and a water bottle.
