Three days in Pilsen: hands-on science at Techmania, medieval underground passages and the memory of the 1945 US liberation.
Pilsen, the main city of West Bohemia, is one of the Czech destinations closest to Belgium. At the Techmania science centre, housed in the former Škoda works, pupils handle exhibits, experiment and visit the planetarium. Beneath the old town, kilometres of medieval passages tell the story of daily life and the defence of the city. The Patton Memorial recalls that Pilsen was liberated by the US Army in May 1945, an episode long hushed up during the communist era. This short stay suits science and history lessons, from the last years of primary school to secondary school.
Programme
Day 1: Journey to Pilsen
- Departure from your school at the agreed time.
- Drive to Pilsen with two drivers on board; a break of at least 30 minutes every 3 hours of driving.
- First walk on Republic Square, around St Bartholomew’s Cathedral.
- Dinner and overnight stay at the accommodation.
Day 2: Techmania and the underground
- Breakfast at the accommodation.
- Day at the Techmania science centre: interactive exhibitions and planetarium (on request).
- Guided tour of the Pilsen historic underground (on request).
- Dinner and overnight stay at the accommodation.
Day 3: Memories of 1945 and return
- Breakfast at the accommodation.
- Visit to the Patton Memorial Pilsen, museum of the city’s liberation in May 1945 (on request).
- Stop at the Great Synagogue, one of the largest in Europe.
- Return journey with two drivers on board and regular breaks (at least 30 minutes every 3 hours).
- Arrival back at school in the evening.

Good to know
- Identity card (Kids-ID for children under 12) and parental consent to travel abroad are required for every pupil.
- Bring the European Health Insurance Card (EHIC); currency: Czech koruna (CZK), euros are not accepted everywhere.
- Techmania is open all year (check opening hours); the underground stays cool: bring a jumper.
- Times are adapted to your school; pupils remain supervised by their teachers, while our drivers ensure safe transport.
