Six days in the Périgord: Lascaux IV, the National Museum of Prehistory, La Roque Saint-Christophe, Sarlat, Padirac and Rocamadour.
The Vézère valley, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is one of the richest prehistoric areas in Europe. At Lascaux IV, a full replica of the decorated cave, pupils discover paintings made some 20,000 years ago, then the National Museum of Prehistory in Les Eyzies shows them tools and bones. A workshop with an instructor lets them try the gestures of the first humans, and La Roque Saint-Christophe shows cliffs inhabited from prehistory to the Middle Ages. Sarlat, a medieval town, the Gouffre de Padirac with its underground river, and Rocamadour clinging to its cliff complete the tour. It is particularly suited to pupils at the end of primary and the start of secondary school, in history and science.
Programme
Day 1: Journey to the Périgord
- Departure from your school at the agreed time, with two drivers on board.
- Regular breaks: our drivers drive for 3 hours at most, then take a 30-minute break, day and night.
- Arrival in the Sarlat area at the end of the day.
- Check-in at the accommodation and dinner.
Day 2: Lascaux and La Roque Saint-Christophe
- Breakfast.
- Visit of Lascaux IV, the International Centre for Cave Art, in Montignac (on request).
- Visit of the troglodyte site of La Roque Saint-Christophe (on request).
- Dinner and overnight at the accommodation.
Day 3: Les Eyzies, capital of prehistory
- Breakfast.
- Visit of the National Museum of Prehistory in Les Eyzies (on request).
- Prehistory workshop with an instructor (flint knapping, fire lighting) (on request).
- Dinner and overnight at the accommodation.
Day 4: Sarlat, a medieval town
- Breakfast.
- A day on foot, without the coach (driver’s rest day).
- Discovery on foot of the old town of Sarlat and its medieval lanes.
- Guided tour of medieval Sarlat (on request).
- Dinner and overnight at the accommodation.
Day 5: Padirac and Rocamadour
- Breakfast.
- Visit of the Gouffre de Padirac and its underground river (on request).
- Discovery of Rocamadour, a pilgrimage town clinging to the cliff.
- Dinner and overnight at the accommodation.
Day 6: Return
- Breakfast.
- Regular breaks: our drivers drive for 3 hours at most, then take a 30-minute break, day and night.
- Return to school in the evening.

Good to know
- Identity card (Kids-ID for children under 12) and parental consent for travel abroad for each pupil, as well as the European Health Insurance Card (EHIC).
- Times adapted to your school; pupils are supervised by the accompanying teachers.
- Lascaux IV and the Gouffre de Padirac must be booked well in advance; Padirac opens roughly from April to early November and is cool all year round: bring a jumper.
